This collection gives us a window into the glamorous life of the upwardly mobile ‘70s style star—from her wild nights dancing at the disco to her most luxurious holiday in the South of France. This lineup is heavily inspired by the disco scene that has become synonymous with 1970s nightlife: black sequins, satin flares, and pops of rouge pepper the pieces.
We then proceed into the post-party aesthetic, which is a nod to the après-ski aesthetic that rose to prominence in film and pop culture during the 1970s: featuring supple cognac leather, rusty orange corduroy, head-to-toe brown snakeprint, cream-colored faux fur, and fully sustainable statement indigo designs.
We are thrilled to share that 100% of indigo styles in this collection boast our proprietary eco wash process, which uses an average of 90% less water during the wash process. Keep reading to meet our on-set star, rising musician Saro, and to get some important tips on denim trends and styling from our on-set stylist, Beverly Nguyen.
If you had to describe your music in one sentence or only a few words—what would you say?
Pop noir meets experimental R&B. Someone once told me it sounds like a mix between Beyonce and Radiohead.
When you first realized you wanted to pursue music—what artists inspired you most?
Morrissey is one of my biggest inspirations. I love how plainly he states his emotions.
Describe your approach to your stage style.
My stage style is about movement and evolution. I love garments that move and breathe with me. As my music evolves, I like to push my aesthetic to extremes, and I’m most comfortable doing that on stage.
What's your favorite footwear to pair back to wide-leg denim?
I love a strong leather boot- pointy, or square toe on a stacked heel.
What are your top 3 favorite denim silhouettes of the moment?
High rise, wide leg trouser, straight leg!
What are some really easy styling tips for straight-leg denim?
I love pairing a straight leg jean with a basic white tank and beige trench coat along with a pair of sneakers and heels in your bag- easily an airport straight to the office outfit!
For those who might be a bit wary of destruction, how would you advise using styling to tone it down?
I follow the rule of wearing three textures at all times but not three colors. Stick to one color palette but for example have multiple textures like a knit, silk, or leather/suede!
Who are your style icons?
Prince, Grace Jones, Rick Owens.
When you think of ‘70s fashion—what comes to mind?
Bell bottoms. Fun colors and patterns. The back room at studio 54.
What’s your Platonic ideal of a holiday party look?
What’s your go-to strategy for wearing denim?
I tend to covet the same pair of jeans for years. Quality denim like J BRAND gets even better with age.
What were the favorite J BRAND clothes you wore during the shoot? Why did you like them?
I loved the blue slacks with the oversized black T-shirt! Those were a perfect fit for my personal everyday style. Comfortable and understated.
How would you describe the J BRAND man?
Effortless and elevated.
What was your particular inspiration when styling this look? (Jules in Opium Destruct)
The J brand girl is very cool, and uninhibited. she's smart and powerful but does everything with a wink. So when it came to this look I was inspired by Bianca Jagger- a bit tough, a bit sexy - not precious.
What are your all-time favorite accessories to pair back to denim?
I love denim on denim, denim and leather, and lastly denim with diamonds 🙂
Beyond classic indigo--what are your go-to ways to style colored denim?
Monochromatic but also see above for my 3 texture rule. Red jeans, dark red knit sweater, burgundy red leather boots!
Describe your Platonic ideal of a holiday party look featuring denim.
My ideal holiday look would be to keep it simple with a bit of sparkle. I'd wear my j brand wide leg denim with a cream silk camisole, the elsa black leather blazer, red lipstick, great earrings. and of course a cocktail and smile all night long.
