When most ordinary humans fly from London to New York, they don’t emerge from the plane, head to a photo shoot, and look impossibly chic all the while. But Paris-bred Julia Restoin Roitfeld is no mere humanthe business woman, model, fashion icon, and mother has led quite the unique life, maintaining her confidence, beauty, and (most importantly) sense of graciousness through it all.

“I know too many people who are nice with people they deem ‘important,’ and the total opposite with others,” Julia tells us. “It’s really a turn-off. I am so glad my mother inspired me this way, and I’m doing the same now, hoping to inspire my daughter Romy.”

The truly fashion-obsessed don’t need a reminder: Julia is the daughter of former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief, CR Fashion Book founder, and legend Carine Roitfeld and her longtime partner, designer Christian Restoin. She grew up counting power players like Riccardo Tisci, Mario Testino, and Tom Ford as family friends; Ford eventually cast Julia as the face of his fragrance Black Orchid in 2004.

“What I admire most [about my mother] is that she is always equally nice and generous to everybody around her, no matter how busy she is,” Julia says of her upbringing. “It’s not always easy with the stress of everyday life, especially in a city like New York, where you get wound up pretty fast. But as my mother always tells me: ‘A lot of people would like your bad days.’ This makes you change [your perspective] and be nice and appreciative in a second! She also taught me to never forget those who gave you your first chances; in my case, internships, photo shoots, and articles.”

Now a long-time resident of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Julia’s main focus at the moment is raising her daughter and managing her editorial space Romy And The Bunnies, which she launched in 2012 shortly after Romy was born. The site is a place for new mothers to gain inspiration and empowerment to, as Julia puts it, “retain their sensuality and femininity.”

“To me, when I create something, whether it’s coming up with a new post for my site, redecorating, or an idea for a shoot, I get a great sense of satisfaction,” Julia says of her creative pursuits. “I think everyone is creative in their own ways, no matter what they do. To me, creativity equals production equals satisfaction.”

Another one of Julia’s passions is encouraging diversity in the worlds of fashion and beauty—seeing women of varying ages, races, and body types represented as fresh standards of beauty.

“I feel thanks to social media, [diversity in fashion] is getting a bit better,” she says. “But I don’t think we are quite there yet. When you look at most fashion shows, the castings are not that diverse in the end.”

JULIA IS WEARING THE NERD SHORT SLEEVE TEE IN WHITE

For this shoot, Juliawho describes her own style as “French classic: sexy kitten with a rock edge”met us at a quaint local café in Manhattan, we then strolled the streets of Downtown where we captured her in some of our favorite current styles, like the patent leather Selena, the Joan High-Rise in Pitch Black, and the Carolina Skinny in Earl Grey. Her partnership with J Brand evolved naturally, she says; she has always found herself quite taken with the brand’s approach to classic, highly liveable denim.

“Most of my closet is all black or denim actually. I have always loved denim since I was a child, from OshKosh overalls to denim cutoffs,” she reminisces. “In the summer, I mostly live in a denim shirt; it always brings out my tan and my eye color. What I love about J Brand is that it’s easy to wear dressed up or down, like the patent leather Selena fit. I can wear them at school drop-off with some flats and a white T-shirt—or sex them up with stilettos and a black bodysuit or tank.”
