Being around Tasya van Ree is a bit like stepping into another dimension. From her omnipresent wide-brimmed hat and the healing crystals she keeps in her pockets to the wise-beyond-her-years look in her eyes, you instantly intuit you’re in the presence of no average human. A multidisciplinary artist, she also boasts on her resumé: entrepreneur, professional world traveler, women’s rights activist, and philosopher.
Born in Hawaii and having called Los Angeles home for quite some time now, Tasya’s West Coast roots have had a major influence on her worldview: The constant currents of the ocean, the reliable rays of the sun, and the free-thinking psychosphere are all mirrored in her ideologies.
“My environment and surroundings definitely have had an effect,” she tells us while we shoot her at West Hollywood’s iconic Chateau Marmont. “There is a symbiotic relationship between both worlds, internal and external, that works closely together to create one overall frequency and can be translated into many different expressions and mediums. Fashion is my personal declaration of where, and at what point in time, I exist. Rhythm is very important in creating beauty on all levels. Traveling is nothing but rhythm magnified. ”
See what we mean when we say she’s no average human?
“Women With Superpowers celebrates the feminine as Artist, Activist, and Healer,” she explains. “Our vision is that through recognizing the multidimensional and extraordinary qualities within us, we can begin to embody our own influence and create shifts to benefit the whole planet. The project has grown to include an international community of influential and inspiring women. ”
She continues: “Oxen Studio, on the other hand, focuses on creating supernatural and surreal visual poetry of the unknown through photography, fine art, installation, and sculpture.”
All the while, Tasya creates her own art—ranging from flat mediums like painting to more dimensional ones like sculpture. Most recently, her work featured in a West Hollywood pop-up exhibit called Optimystic organized by Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd.
“I love all mediums. They are all very powerful and I love interacting with them daily,” she describes. “They help me create movement and importance continuously. Each and every one of them give me a freedom to express what I’m feeling and thinking at any given moment.”
To Tasya, fashion is just another medium. She counts herself a long-time, loyal fan of J Brand.
“The brand means everything to me. J Brand makes me feel good from the outside in. It fits me perfectly, in all the right places and all the right ways,” she says. “I’m loving the Aiah leather Jacket. It makes me feel glorious and inspired!”
Like everything else in her life, for Tasya, clothing goes way beyond the surface.
“[Style] is my daily practice of life. It’s about honoring love, and respecting the reverential truth of my time here,” she says. “I envision how J Brand can be an instrumental force of bringing back empowerment and greatness to everyone who is listening.”
